Statement by the student group Red Workers’ Horizon
For weeks, students have known about Jared Taylor’s approaching speech on campus. Since then, students have felt disgust, anger, and fear. This upcoming event would be less horrific if it were not fellow students who planned it. However, each member of the so-called “Mavily” knows which students planned Jared Taylor’s arrival. They may share classes with these students, live in their dorms, and perhaps, they once viewed them as friends. However, these aforementioned students who invited the well-known white supremacist betrayed the trust of the campus and their peers through various means, not just through the invitation.
This other form of betrayal manifests itself in the multiple clubs that they run or have involvement in, including, but not limited to, Western Culture Club (“WCC” for short), Turning Point USA Club (“TPUSA” for short), and Students For Life. However, while TPUSA is guilty of obnoxious rhetoric that questions the right to existence for trans people and immigrants, it is WCC that is this clique’s most egregious product. Based on descriptions from students, Western Culture Club is clearly a White Supremacist organization that promotes misinformation and hate. To spread the word and warn about this group, those who read this summary of the first meeting must share this document so that everyone on campus knows who Maxwell Applebaugh and his pets really are.

In the first meeting, much happened, including a presentation about “Western Culture” (filled with lies) and a debate with another group who stood up to WCC and its members. Both of these revealed the amount of hate and lack of critical thinking that infects WCC and its board members.
Regarding the presentation, the students began by describing what they believe Western Culture is. They first stated that Western Culture began in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. This is why their symbol is a structure with pillars, similar to the Parthenon. Pillars are a well-known dog whistle among neo-fascists like Applebaugh. Many fascists on the internet use the pillar emoji to signal to others like them who they are. While it is wise to question this assertion, as pillars are such a common symbol in everyday life, one must understand that the point of dog whistles like these is plausible deniability, hence why this organization is not called “Nazi Club,” but instead “Western Civilization Club.”
Additionally, the belief that Western Civilization originated from Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome is incorrect for a myriad of reasons. However, the simplest is that Western Civilization originated in the Middle East with the Ancient Mesopotamians. This is why the History 101 course at CMU (called Western Civilizations 1) begins with the Mesopotamians, Egyptians, and Hebrews, not the Greeks and Romans. Naturally, WCC ignores this information because the fact that Western Civilization began not with Europeans but instead with those they likely designate as Untermenschen in private is too hard to bear.
Another highly problematic claim from WCC’s presentation was that all modern music derives from classical European music. They mentioned Jazz, Rock, and Country, specifically. This assertion is entirely delusional, as all of these genres stemmed from African influence. In fact, jazz was explicitly meant to be a rebellious genre that went against classical music and its accompanying racist and classist culture. Furthermore, one of the main instruments associated with Country Music is the banjo, a West African instrument. Anybody who took the History of Modern Music class at CMU or understands anything about music history in general would know about these influences. Again, it is clear that Applebaugh, the one who gave the presentation, either deliberately cut “Eastern” influence out of this topic or was so uneducated that he had no right to make or give this presentation in the first place.
A final glaring inaccuracy rooted in insanity (of nearly infinite examples) was the assertion that Eastern folklore and myths do not hold notions of right and wrong or any morals and that only Western mythology and folklore have those elements. This notion is incredibly laughable, as one may turn to nearly any story from Africa or Asia and find one that promotes moral action. For example, many stories from Buddhism advocate for self-sacrifice, including one in which an ascetic allowed a Buddha to use his body as a bridge to get across a muddy road. This particular story highlights the importance of respecting authority and providing generosity to strangers. This, however, is just one example and is but a drop of water in an ocean of myths and tales from all of Asia, Africa, the Americas, and more. If Applebaugh had taken a mythology course at his college, he would understand that the West is not unique in terms of such messages, and it again indicates that he is either brainless or willfully ignorant.

Additionally, his assertion about Western stories is a dog whistle that encourages the belief that it is only White culture that can tame these other “lesser” groups, thus making it a competition over which cultures are the best. Despite all this, he still had the audacity to lie and claim that this club did not support the “us vs them” ideology. Overall, the presentation at the first meeting was nothing but a poorly disguised attempt to promote ethnocentrism and white-nationalism. However, the hateful messages did not end there, and WCC’s debate with another organization provided even more information about Applebaugh’s beliefs.
According to multiple accounts, not much happened after the presentation until a group of people involved in a left-wing activist organization showed up to dismantle some of the arguments WCC made. This was not the first time this group debated with WCC, however. In both conversations, WCC club members admitted to their bigotry. When the leftist organization first confronted them in the university center days before, one WCC member revealed that he wished Nazi Germany won WWII and that he believed the US fought on the wrong side. Additionally, at the first club meeting during the debate, another student openly admitted that he believed that homosexuality was an overall negative for society. This was the same student who once said he believed Medieval Europe was “vastly superior” to the modern US. He made this statement at his TPUSA panel when they proposed the question, “Can a man become a woman?” This was only minutes after he ranted about a mysterious (nonexistent) “cake gender.”
Overall, it is exceedingly clear that Applebaugh’s hate groups on campus are out of control and that their goals do not align with those of the university. Additionally, their statements indicate that they are a danger to any students who belong to oppressed groups. So, one must issue this warning to all students who fit this description: stay away from WCC, TPUSA, etc., and do not engage with Applebaugh or any of his associates. When Jared Taylor comes tomorrow, avoid the university center and do anything you can to ensure your safety, as the university does not care for it. If you are going to protest, do not go alone, and ensure that you have no substances or weapons on you. CMU has fallen to fascism, and we must take action accordingly.
