GRAND JUNCTION

By Sasha Gardner

On Tuesday, June 10th, members of the wider Grand Junction community stood in solidarity with protesters in Los Angeles.

In the aftermath of the Trump-Musk breakup, large ICE raids were carried out throughout the Los Angeles area, prompting largely peaceful protest in support of victims. The militarized Los Angeles Police Department began to use rubber bullets and other incendiary tactics to disperse the protesters. When the police (domestic cops) continued to escalate the situation, the fascist administration turned the California National Guard, as well as seven hundred Marines (imperialist cops), against our Angelino comrades..

As talks here in the Valley about how to show solidarity developed, Indivisible GJ sent out a flyer to advertise the agreed-upon time, date, and location. Importantly, Indivisible insisted that they did not organize the event.

About fifty people in Grand Junction showed up at Lilac Park in solidarity, just off of 1st Street and North Avenue, to show that from GJ to LA, ICE has got to go away. While several cars rolled coal and shouted insults, and a few fascist sympathizers lingered nearby, members of the protest safety team, including two members of our local Democratic Socialists of America chapter, were able to ensure the safety of everyone present. The protest safety team was reportedly in contact with our own domestic cops, who relayed a potential threat of vehicular violence.

Amid the summer heat (yay climate change!!!!) and the looming fear of local neo-Nazis and the jackboot, one thing remains clear: the most important part of any protest is the planning that goes into it. While Lilac Park served well enough, the location was neither safe, nor visible. High-speed motorists, lack of public parking and shade, and the steep incline of the venue created unnecessary risk for our community. The desire to switch it up is completely understandable, but care needs to be taken to ensure that novelty does not lead to a lack of safety. Many thanks to the safety team for taking this risk seriously.

From GJ to LA, we stand with our immigrant neighbors.

DENVER

The same evening in Denver police deployed teargas and pepper balls and arrested 17 people. One person was hospitalized after being shot  in the head by a citizen fascist. The victim is outta surgery and stable.

Around 50 people showed in solidarity with L.A. and reached 10,000s during Roaring Fork Valley rush hour Wednesday morning.
