The Revolutionist: Where did the idea for the Mother Earth Free Market come from?

Quinn Miller: All credit for the idea and the poster art goes to Dana Guber and the crew at Rubble Art Collective, a creator space and used art supply store in Fort Collins (@rubbleartcollective on IG). Dana has been organizing the Mother Earth Free Market for a few years now, and I thought it would be a good idea to bring it here to Grand Junction. A big thank you to Gemini Beer Company for giving us a space to host this event.

TR: What is meant by “Solidarity Economics”?

QM: In my head, it means that we as a community can help and support each other by freely providing some of what we need to each other. Neighbors helping neighbors!

TR: What is the event going to look like? What can someone expect when they show up?

QM: We will be setting up on the lawn in front of the Lowell school. There will be some tables and picnic blankets for people to put their things on, but if you want to be sure you’ll have a spot off of the grass for your stuff feel free to bring your own blanket or folding table. There will be hot beverages available as well. PLEASE remember to take your unclaimed items with you when you leave!

TR: Is it going to be a barter or gifting based exchange?

QM: No bartering, everything is freely offered and freely given.

TR: What if someone doesn’t have anything to give or trade?

QM: Show up anyway and take what you need! I would also encourage people to think about what they can offer outside of consumer objects– bring a skill, some art, or other intangible things of value.

TR: Are you looking for any volunteers to help set up?

QM: Not necessarily, but if you have an extra folding table or picnic blanket please bring it! I’m also looking for ways to get unclaimed items to people who didn’t show up to the event but could use them, so suggestions are welcome there.

TR: If this event goes well, do you have plans on hosting more of them?

QM: Yes, I’m hoping to make this a regular event.

TR: Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. We hope to attend with free zines and back issues of the Rev. Can you remind our readers when and where the event is taking place?

QM: Saturday, January 24 from 3-5 pm at the Lowell school building (310 N 7th St).
